After much anticipation a fairly timid affair ending in a 1-1 draw.... and with 22 players!!

Maybe the cold weather was causing some of the players to be thinking of curling up at home in front of a roaring fire, after a hot bath, with a cup of cocoa (I know I certainly was - not a nice day to be stuck on the bench!) as this local derby didnt ever really ignite into action.

For both sides the players application was generally ok but when this isnt enough to win you games you have to show passion and desire, more so than the opposition, that you want to win the game. With this in mind I think a draw was the right result with neither team stepping up to the plate.

The Wickers took the lead around 5 minutes into the second half when Steve Davis followed up the rebound of his own penalty. The penalty was awarded for a blatant handball by the Arundel defender as he attempted to win a header.
This lead didnt last long though with the Mullets equalizing through James Crane just minutes later. Crane disposessed the defender and unleashed a strike from an angle at the edge of the box to beat the keeper down low at the near post.

Onto Ringmer Saturday - if that is still on given their current goings ons.

3   General Board / Anyone for a day out in Arundel this weekend?  on: Nov 21st, 2008, 08:10am

I hear they have a nice nature reserve on the river there!?

By coincidence the Wickers are also going to be in town when they take on the Mullets at Mill Road for their first derby in the 08/09 league campaign.

Should be a good game with both teams in reasonable form. We have lost the last two games but played the majority of both with only 10 men and still could have possibly got more from either game. Arundel however have had some good recent results seeing them through to the 3rd rounds of both the Senior Cup and the Vase but loosing their last game 1-0 away at Shoreham.

My prediction: Game not ending with 22 players!

I notice that Chamal played in Lewes' last game against Wrexham on 1st Nov.
This means that his 'club suspension' lasted for a total of 1 week with seemingly no further action taken.

Their club website said they were collating statements from various people so this lifting of the ban may have been a result of the information in those statements however without any further mention of it it does appear, from the outside, that the situation has been tidily swept under the carpet.

Regardless of statements going purely on facts I still wonder is he really that good a player or a pivotal part of the team that Lewes couldn’t have taken a stand against this type of behavior and sent a message that this wont be tolerated by them or any other club?
Perhaps some good PR the club could do with at the moment?

I must say that our lad, and club, have got over this unfortunate event and rather than dragging up an issue with this specific player was wondering perhaps how other clubs may have realistically dealt with it as it is all too easy for people to say "I would have done this" or "They should do that". Is it different for clubs at professional/semi pro levels? (various examples at top level) Does the club situation come into play here also?
Should it be left to the club to decide appropriate action or should the football authorities deal with it?

Interesting.

Great performance last weekend Wick men but marred somewhat by the injury to young Pip. What did they find at the hospital ? How long will he be out of action ?

John O'Hara Cup 2nd Round
Wick FC 2 v 0 Rustington
Scorers : Scott Murfin and Lee Barnard

Taken from Littlehampton Gazette :

Published Date: 29 October 2008
By Ollie Berry
AFTER a coolly-converted Scott Murfin penalty, Lee Barnard sealed the game late at Crabtree Park to send Wick past local rivals Rustington and through to a third-round tie at either St Francis or Peacehaven.
It was third time lucky on Tuesday evening after the match was abandoned in September when the floodlights failed, and postponed from its rearranged date three weeks ago.

There was, however, no shortage of spark and bright play on Tuesday night, and Wick's assistant manger Vic Short was delighted with the result. He said: "I thought we thoroughly deserved the win. We got our foot in the game and hurt them more than they hurt us. We managed to play the better football and the lights even stayed on, so we're happy."

The game started at a high pace with both teams creating chances but, in a scoreless first half, it was the best chance that fell to Wick late on, when Lee Barnard's low shot was kept out by Blues keeper Andy McCarthy.

Both teams looked to go forward with urgency in the second half, and Wick had the better of the chances. An action packed couple of minutes midway through the half saw Wick take the lead, when they could easily have been one down.

A Duncan Barnes header from Simon Clayton's free kick was parried by Wick keeper Anthony Ender, and Brett Neal's follow-up header hit the post.

Within seconds, Wick broke into Rustington's penalty area, Phil Turner was brought down, and referee Barrie Small pointed to the spot. Scott Murfin stepped up and converted the spot-kick straight down the middle, sending McCarthy to his right.

Nine minutes later, Wick thought they had gone 2-0 up but Ben Torode's effort was ruled out for offside.

Rustington pressed for an equaliser but lacked a cutting edge in front of goal, and Wick sealed their place in the next round with two minutes left when Barnard drilled home.

Rustington boss Gareth Davies said: "I'm disappointed because I didn't think there was much between us. But I'm proud of the players. They came out and gave their all and that's all I can ask.

"I'm pleased we've come to a Divison 1 side and managed to hold our own. We did have seven of our squad out for tonight's game but I'm not hiding behind excuses.

"It's all about taking your chances, we didn't and they did. Good luck to them. I hope they go on to win it."

WICK: Ender; Torode, Bricknell, Moss, Curnow, Sharman; Barnard, N.Murfin, Pearce; Turner, S.Murfin. Subs: Briggs (Pearce 75), Davies (Murfin 85), Sutcliffe, Boniface.

RUSTINGTON: McCarthy; Barnes, Pickford, Neal, Bibb, Green; Clayton, Morton, Duffy; Hatch, Gibbs. Subs: Cox (Duffy 45), C.Kirkham (Hatch 70), Tribe, Askew. Att: 107.

A comprehensive 5 - 0 victory away at Hailsham showed a certain BOUNCEBACKABILITY on Saturday afternoon.

Goals by Ryan Hudson, Colin Moss, Julian Curnow, Miles Scerri and Phil Turner ensured a happy home trip.

Next up is our re-scheduled JOH Cup game on Tuesday versus Rustington.

Lost 5 - 1 in the Sussex Senior Cup against Conference Premier side Lewes.

A devestating 10 minutes first half spell put the visitors 4 - 0 up before Dave Sharman earnt an early bath for a last man tackle !

The visitors increased their lead in the second half before Gareth Bricknell notched the Wickers reply in the 89th minute.

An unfortunate incident took place after the match but hopefully things will be sorted soon.
